About us
About Us
MyMiniStudio is made by Ashley and Vik. We're a wife and husband team of long-time miniature hobbyists.
Who are we?
We've been in the hobby for most of our lives! We're avid painters, kitbashers, and unapologetic fans of theater-of-the-mind play over crunchy rulebooks. We grew up on Warhammer Fantasy, Mordheim, and 40K, and these days you'll mostly find us playing One Page Rules and D&D with our kids and friends around the gaming table.
For us, the joy of the hobby has always been the creative process. We're a bit like Ork Meks: tinkering, converting, prototyping, and trying things just to see what's possible. Our collection of bits is embarrassingly large and has its own dedicated closet space. While we're not high-level painters, we're adamant about slaying the grey and filling our shelves with beautiful little creatures.
Why did we build this?
Like a lot of hobbyists, we have a growing STL collection with sculpts from many talented sculptors and artists. And like a lot of hobbyists, we don't always enjoy the messy process of resin printing. FDM printing is getting pretty darn close for minis, but "close" still means a serious time investment, and somewhere along the way the printer becomes the hobby instead of painting. All those beautiful sculpts deserve a better fate than sitting idle in a folder.
We also travel a lot as a family and we want to take our hobbies with us, even when luggage space is limited. We travel with our kids, and a wet palette and forty dropper bottles don't always make the cut. There was no good solution out there for digital mini painting, only expensive professional 3D tools built for many different use cases. That got us thinking...
"Be the change you want to see"
So we rolled up our sleeves, set aside a significant amount of time over many months and built the thing we wanted. Vik has a background in 3D programming and had been looking for an excuse to put miniatures and graphics together for years. MyMiniStudio is that idea taken seriously.
Why MyMiniStudio?
MyMiniStudio is an attempt to faithfully capture the feel of physical miniature painting and our common tools and techniques in software form. It's admittedly not 1:1 like physical painting and is not meant to be a realistic simulation.
Our litmus test for every tool is simple: does it behave the way a painter expects? A wash should settle into the recesses and tint the model depending on paint thickness. A drybrush should catch the raised edges and be controlled. Airbrush should provide controlled and beautiful blends. Stippling should build up texture. Techniques should layer together and compose the way real paint does, without you ever thinking about the software's way of modeling things.
That's a deliberately different goal from a physics simulator, and from the big professional packages. We're not trying to out-muscle anyone on raw fidelity. We're building one purpose-built tool, shaped end-to-end around one simple premise:
Build, Undercoat, Paint, Base, and take beauty shots you're proud of.
Who is this designed for?
Honestly? Everyone who loves this hobby.
- New painters can practice techniques and build confidence before spending real money on expensive supplies.
- Experienced painters can explore a color scheme for their armies or plan a competition piece with zero risk to the models on their desk.
- Sculptors and model makers can bring their work to life and shoot gorgeous renders of their sculpts for marketing purposes.
- Parents and kids can share a paint session anywhere. No setup, spills, or reason to wait for the weekend.
We want it to be accessible and genuinely easy. It is something hobbyists of any age can open and feel at home in within minutes. Another tool in the toolbox, right next to your paint brushes.
How do I get it?
As of July 2026, MyMiniStudio is in closed beta. We're opening access on a rolling basis in small and focused waves through August and September. We want to actually talk to every tester rather than broadcast at a crowd and hope we're on the right path.
We're testing in shifts as we go. Early waves are about the fundamentals: device compatibility, how intuitive the techniques feel, and above all whether painting feels right. I.e. Does the wash settle where you expect, does the brush do what your hand intended, etc.
Later waves widen out: catching issues, stress-testing the flow with thousands of different 3D models, and discovering what meaningful default settings should be.
A few things to know before you sign up:
- This is a hands-on working beta, not a free preview. The preview period will come shortly and be publicly announced.
- We expect testers to be actively participating and communicating. We're building our community with the most passionate folks right from the beginning.
- Sharing your painted pieces with us is a required part of the process. Seeing what you make and where the tools fought you is the feedback.
- You'll be invited to a private Discord group with the other testers and us. That's where the collaboration happens: sharing work, comparing techniques, and shaping what gets built next.
If painting minis is your thing and that sounds like fun rather than homework, then we'd love to have you!
